Highland Secondary students will celebrate Earth Day this year with a student-organized Earth Day Conference, featuring special guests Rachel Parent and Rachel Blaney.
Parent will open the conference from 11 a.m. to noon Friday, April 22.
The nationally-recognized 16-year-old founder of A Kid’s Right to Know will address the food and health issues of GMOs — what students need to know to live a healthy life and move towards a healthy planet.
Parent has been a featured speaker on Tedx, WE Day, The Uplift Festival in Australia, Toronto Veg Festive and Vancouver Expo, and has been recognized as one of the 7 Kids Saving the Planet Right Now by ELuxe Magazine, and noted as one of the Top 20 under 20 Changemakers by the National Post.
Students will spend the afternoon attending a variety of environmental/educational sessions led by experts from our community. Topics include water issues, drought, ocean toxicity, the making and importance of parks, food and seed sustainability, estuary health, river and salmon issues, climate change and animal habitat.
Rachel Blaney, North Island-Powell River Member of Parliament, will close the conference in a school-wide assembly by discussing not only what the government has begun to do to address climate change, but also the difficulties we all face in a time of deep change.
The Highland Eco Team invites the public to attend, but as space is limited, call the school to reserve a seat at (250) 339-5525.
Tickets are $2 for students and $5 for adults. All donations will go directly to Rachel’s organization, Kids’ Right to Know.
