A delegation from the Sunshine Organics and SunCoast Grown home-delivery service appeared before the regional district committee of the whole last week to discuss a $100,000 grant from Buy B.C.
The money, presented earlier in the year by local MLA Don McRae, is being used to promote local agriculture and to connect consumers with producers.
“What’s really important now is local,” said consultant Judi Tyabji, noting the top concern among consumers is genetically modified organisms (GMO).
“The demand for local products is going up.”
She said the business is trying to help producers through a new distribution model.
Tyabji is president of Pebble in the Pond Environmental Society in Powell River. She was accompanied by Rachel Mooney, who manages the operation in the Valley, and
Melissa Call, who began the business in Powell River in 2002.
It’s been running eight years in the Valley.
