Members of the Tletinqox (Anaham) Band, Daybreak Rotary and the Dental Mission Project welcomed 23 students and professors from the University of British Columbia’s faculty of dentistry Thursday morning at the Williams Lake Airport.
For three days the dentists will be offering a clinic at the community of Tletinqox.
It’s the fourth year of the program, said Daybreak Rotary’s Shirley-Pat Chamberlain.
“We have our literacy program and are now promoting health literacy,” she added.
This year more than 100 students applied to participate in the program, and like a lottery, 23 were selected.
They will stay out in the community, work in the clinic Thursday afternoon, all day Friday and Saturday, and enjoy cultural activities in the evening.
Some of the students are returning for a second stint, while others are here for the first time.
The Dental Mission Project has taken dental clinics to other countries in the world, but more recently decided there are communities in Canada that could benefit as well, said Bob Blacker a volunteer with the society.
