The defending champion University of British Columbia men’s team rolled to a commanding first-round lead as the Golf Canada University/College National Championships kicked off Tuesday at Morningstar Golf Club in Parksville.
Led by Scott Secord’s 5-under-par 67, the low round of the day, the Thunderbirds placed three golfers in the top five and sat at 10-under for the round, a whopping 20 strokes ahead of Camosun College and two other teams. The University of Calgary was at plus-5 for the tourney with nine holes left to play late Tuesday afternoon.
Kwalikum Secondary School alum Kyler Bourgeault, a late entry into the field from Vancouver Island University, shot an 8-over-par 80.
With play on the women’s side still in progress Tuesday afternoon, Université Laval Rouge et Or led host University of Victoria by a single stroke, with both teams having completed nine holes.
The 72-hole tournament, featuring the top 20 men’s and top 12 women’s teams in the nation, continues with full rounds Wednesday and Thursday. The field will then be cut to the top 10 men’s and top six women’s teams for Friday’s final round, along with individuals ranked among the top 15.
Spectators are welcome to watch play; there is no admission charge.
