Ucluelet cop urges motorists to drive safely this summer

The Pacific Rim Highway hosted two separate single vehicle collisions over May Long Weekend.

The Pacific Rim Highway hosted two separate single vehicle collisions over May Long Weekend.

Both crashes occurred on Saturday May 21 and the drivers of both vehicles escaped without significant injury.

Around 11 a.m., a driver lost control of their vehicle near Incinerator Rock and crashed into a ditch, according to Const. Marcel Midlane of the Ucluelet RCMP.

“He lost control, swerved across the oncoming lane into the ditch, flipped the vehicle end-over-end and then landed upright, thankfully, and was able to crawl out of the vehicle,” Midlane said. “He sustained some minor cuts and bruises.”

The second accident occurred near Green Point Campground around 2 p.m. when a driver drifted too far out of their lane and clipped a road sign causing them to lose control.

Midlane is urging West Coast locals and visitors to be cautious on the roads as the busy season sets in.

“With a mixture of slow traffic you occasionally get an erratic driver who wants to get by everybody and that can turn into a dangerous situation,” he said.

“We’ve had a couple of reports of people passing on double solid lines and blind corners and speeding; generally in a hurry to get nowhere fast…That always poses a potentially dangerous situation to everybody on the road.”
