Ucluelet local frustrated by stored speed bumps

A local woman was recently flummoxed to discover Ucluelet has speed bumps locked away in storage.

After picking up her May 20 Westerly News and reading about the stored speed bumps that have been sitting in the district’s public works yards for the past few years, Lisbeth Edwards immediately wrote her local government asking why these bumps haven’t been put to use.

â€œI was very disappointed to read the Westerly News today to find that the District has had speed bumps in the works yard for quite some time none of which are being used,” Edwards wrote.

“I wrote council some time ago asking for a speed bump along Helen Road near my house where I find that drivers speed up to go over the small crest hill. One of the worst offenders are the people who take their children to school and then roar along Helen to avoid the school zone.”

Edwards wrote that she has raised Helen’s speed issues with the local RCMP but asked why the district has ignored her concerns and not installed a speed bump on the road.

“I did write a letter to Council however I never receive so much as a reply…Now I find that they have the bumps sitting there collecting dust at the taxpayers expense,” she wrote.

“What is wrong with a speed bump along Helen as it is a narrow no-shoulder road with a very poor design as it almost encourages drivers to speed up”?

Ucluelet’s council reviewed Edwards’ letter during a recent meeting but did not take any action

Mayor Dianne St. Jacques asked if the district had received any other complaints from the neighborhood regarding speeding-traffic on Helen Road and CAO Andrew Yeates responded no other complaints have come in.

St. Jacques suggested local police would keep their eyes on the area.

“The RCMP has obviously already been made aware of it…so they will be monitoring the situation,” she said.
