Uniform vote underway at Eugene Reimer middle school

Results of a vote on whether school uniforms should be introduced at Eugene Reimer Middle School could take up to another three weeks to be announced.

Results of a vote on whether school uniforms should be introduced at Eugene Reimer middle school could take up to another three weeks to be announced.

Julie Stroszyn, acting president of the school’s parent advisory council (PAC), said the PAC wants to ensure that at least 90 per cent of parents cast a vote on the issue.

Voting opened Wednesday at the school, and Stroszyn estimates that about one-third of parents took part. Those votes have now been sealed, while the process continues.

She said parents who have not yet voted are welcome to do so at the PAC meeting on Monday (May 2) at 7 p.m. or at Eugene Reimer during school hours.

“We really want to make sure everyone is accommodated,” Stroszyn said.

The vote is open to parents of the school, as well as feeder elementary schools with students scheduled to attend Reimer next year.

Under school district policy, one vote for each student enrolled at the school is alloted to the parents/guardians. There are almost 500 students currently attending Eugene Reimer.

At least 66 per cent of the votes cast must be in favour in order for uniforms to be implemented. The percentage required used to be 75 per cent, but the board of education recently decided to reduce that number.

If the results are in favour of uniforms, Stroszyn said the PAC will work with the school to come up with an outfit that is agreeable to the majority of parents. Cost will be taken into consideration.

She said the PAC has begun researching some options, with pants and tops each ranging from $16 to $35.

The matter arose at the school after a parent survey, which included numerous questions, indicated some interest on the issue.
