A late-night unprovoked assault has left 19-year-old Cameron Currie in the hospital with potentially long-term injuries.
An RCMP report says Currie made the call after the attack, which happened around 2:30 a.m., Sunday, July 16, outside of The Royal Hotel & Bar in Fernie.
Currie says that he was attacked from behind by a group of five men and one woman, while chatting to a friend outside the entrance. He was then beaten on the ground, suffering impaction fractures to his left knee area and ligament damage including a suspected ACL rupture.
Currie spent the remainder of the night in hospital where he remained overnight. He is set to receive MRI scans in Calgary over the next few days.
“I am left unable to walk and unable to work,” he said. “As a ski instructor, it is doubtful I will be able to pursue my career this upcoming winter either.
The avid skier is originally from Newcastle, U.K., and has spent the past two winters in Fernie. He decided this summer to continue working on the hill as an Ariel Park guide.
“All in all, I’m shocked, confused, angry, and a bit upset about the situation,” he said. “It’s not something I would expect to happen in a town like this.”
In the dark, Currie was not able to identify his attackers, but does remember one woman who went by the name, Cindy.
The Elk Valley RCMP is currently investigating the situation, and is requesting that anyone with information please come forward.
