Snow is in the forecast for Friday and at times throughout the weekend.

Snow is in the forecast for Friday and at times throughout the weekend.

Snow began falling in the Fraser Valley this morning (Friday) and could amount to between 10 and 20 centimetres by Saturday morning, according to Environment Canada.

The snowfall is the result of a weak warm front moving north from Washington State, bringing light bands of snow to the Lower Mainland.

“The warm front will be followed closely by a low-pressure system, which will bring heavier snow to the area beginning Friday evening,” says Environment Canada.

The snow could become mixed with, or change to, rain at lower elevations. Freezing rain is also a possibility in the Fraser Valley tonight.

Periods of snow and/or rain are expected through the weekend.

Here’s a summary of the forecast for the coming days:

Today: Cloudy. Periods of snow beginning this morning. Amount 2 to 4 cm. Temperature steady near zero.

Tonight: Snow at times heavy. Risk of freezing rain this evening. Snowfall amount 5 to 10 cm. Temperature steady near zero.

Saturday: Periods of snow ending in the morning then cloudy with a 60 per cent chance of flurries. Amount 2 cm. High plus 1.

Saturday night: Rain or snow. Low zero.

Sunday: Periods of snow or rain. High plus 2.

Sunday night: Snow. Low minus 2.
