The Mahogany at Mill Lake tower project will likely be heading to another public hearing. However, ths time the debate will be about commercial property, rather than residential.
Abbotsford’s Quantum Properties, which initiated the tower project, has asked the city for an amendment to the Official Community Plan and to rezone the area, allowing a change to the original concept.
Initially, the residential building project was to contain 272 multi-family units in a 26-storey tower, and four-storey apartment building, located at 2180 Gladwin Rd.
Quantum wants to reduce the number of units to 243, allowing the first three storeys of the tower’s podium base to be used for commercial purposes, such as medical offices, other commercial services, a seniors’ centre, coffee shop and other non-residential uses.
Council offered its support for the idea on Monday and will vote, at a future meeting, whether to give first reading to the changes. If it does, a public hearing would be needed before granting second and third reading.
The controversial Mahogany project was approved in March 2011.
