UPDATE: The presentation has been postponed due to weather conditions. The presentation will instead be made at the school board’s next public meeting on Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. at the district’s office – 2790 Tims Street.
Abbotsford school district superintendent Kevin Godden will give a “state of the nation” presentation on student achievement next week.
He will speak at Matsqui Centennial Auditorium on Tuesday, Feb. 7. The presentation will begin at 7 p.m., following a 6:30 p.m. reception.
Godden said the annual report – which superintendents are required to compile under provincial law – is usually presented at a board of education meeting but this year it was decided a standalone public event was warranted.
“The board felt that there is enough to celebrate and that the community ought to own it,” he said.
Godden will share statistics from the district’s 2015/2016 school year, including the progress of technology and progressive workforce programs, as well as graduation and university transfer rates.
A key figure Godden said he plans to share is the district’s progress towards its goal of having all students reading at grade level by the end of Grade 3.
Last year’s report, for the 2015/2016 school year, showed Abbotsford students exceeding the provincial average in both reading and numeracy proficiency among Grade 4 students, as well as in high school graduation rates.
