  • May. 30, 2021 12:00 a.m.

UPDATE at 3 p.m: Penticton Fire Department are asking people to avoid the area around the Campbell Mountain landfill where a fire is burning Sunday afternoon.

It appears the fire started in a pile of scraps near the metal compacting machinery.

The blaze started around 12:20 p.m. Avoid the area of Reservoir Road and Naramata road as water tender shuttle operations are in use at this time.

A picture of the flames and black smoke erupting near the metal recycling machine was posted to Facebook.

The black smoke has turned to white smoke as firefighters start to knock down the fire.

More to come as information becomes available.
