A home in the McKinley Landing area was lost to fire overnight.

The Kelowna Fire Department dispatch center received a 911 call at approximately 8 p.m. Tuesday, reporting a roof on fire on the 1600 block of Bennett Road in the McKinley Landing area.

“The first arriving engine reported visible flames coming from the roof area at the rear of a large residential structure,” said John Kelly, platoon captain for the Kelowna Fire Department.

“The fire spread rapidly across the entire roof and then into the structure. The structure was unable to be saved. Several grass fires were also ignited to the north in the forested area and around the property.”

These were started from sparks and embers that were going approximately 150 feet into the air. Two tenders were used to shuttle water to the scene, as the hydrant was approximately 700 metres away. KFD responded with six engines, two water tenders, a rescue unit and command vehicle with 25 fire fighters.

What was first reported as a chimney fire soon turned into a massive blaze that reportedly destroyed a home in McKinley Landing.

More than five fire engines were called to the 4600 block of Bennett Road just after 8 p.m.

According to those on scene, there was no nearby fire hydrant and pumper trucks had to be brought in to extinguish the flames.

The chimney fire quickly spread to the roof of the home, calling for more pumper trucks to the scene.

Police and ambulance are reportedly at the incident. It is unclear if anyone was at home at the time of the blaze.

More to come.
