The Campbell River School District says a soliciting effort using the Carihi Secondary School name that was initially thought to be fraudulent has now been determined to be legitimate.

In a Feb. 19 social media post, the school district said it learned that someone has been canvassing the community to solicit funds for a Carihi school trip to Guatemala, despite there being no school trip planned to the country this year.

However, it has been determined that there is a Carihi Interact Club activity with Rotary raising funds for medical equipment going to Guatemala. The necessary notifications through proper channels had not been done leading to the School District’s issuing of a warning to the community.

The Campbell River Mirror was contacted by SD72 Communications and Engagement Officer Jennifer Patrick notifying us that the warning was a mistake and came down to some eagre students jumping the gun with fundraising before proper approval processes had been completed.
