On Wednesday, March 14 around 3:30 p.m., the Kimberley Fire Department responded to a scene where a multi-car carport had collapsed behind Ptarmigan Apartments (299 Kimbrook Cres.).
Kimberley RCMP were also on scene with a K9 unit to search for any potential people who could have been trapped beneath the snow and rubble.
Kimberley Fire Chief Rick Prasad says the department is thankful that no one was in the carport at the time of the collapse, and that there were no injuries.
Prasad says the department suspects that the large snow load on top of the roof of the carport was a factor in the collapse, however they do not know for sure.
“With the weather we have had and all this snow, combined with a late spring, warm temperatures and some rain, snow becomes quite heavy,” said Prasad. “We always reccommend that a professional come and assess your roof, and that you hire a professional to clear the snow from your roof as well.”
Prasad explained that the carport adjacent to the one that had collapsed has been cleared by a professional.
In terms of the clean up, Prasad says the Fire Department has isolated the area and ensured it is safe, and it is now in the hands of the building owner.
