UPDATE: Details of the data breach have been updated to reflect more recent information from Recycle Coach.
Residents using the My Waste mobile app may have been subject to a data breach, according to a release put out by the City of Delta on Thursday.
The My Waste app, created by Recycle Coach, allows residents to get garbage pickup reminders and recycling information.
On April 16, email addresses were stolen from My Waste’s MailChimp account. According to the company, no customer names, locations or passwords were taken during the data breach.
The company has notified all users about the breach, and advises that users be extra vigilant about spam messages. As far as the company is aware, there has only been one spam message sent so far. It contained the subject line “”our Exclusive Recyclecoach Deal With 95% Discount!”
The company said its internal systems were not affected by the breach, but is taking steps to ensure incidents like this don’t happen again, including using multi-factor authentication for all internal and third-party services.
According to the City of Delta press release, the city does not collect or store data from the app.
Anyone who has been affected by the breach can contact Recycle Coach at contact@recyclecoach.com.
