A 16-day-old Saanich infant is awaiting surgery with non-life-threatening injuries after a family dog mauled her early Sunday morning, according to Saanich police.

The incident took place inside a home in the 4000 block of McLellan Road, just off Mckenzie near Glanford in the early morning hours of Dec. 28, said Saanich police Sgt. Steve Eassie. The dog, a pitbull-Rottweiler mixed breed, was euthanized Sunday afternoon, Eassie confirmed.

“I can confirm that the animal had been the subject of complaints dating back several years for incidents involving other animals,” he added. No incidents on file involved human injuries, Eassie said.

“The infant it scheduled for surgery but is in stable condition at this point,” he said.

Saanich police officers are now contemplating charges for criminal negligence, but the investigation is ongoing.
