UPDATE: Evacuation order continues for some Lumby residents

The state of local emergency remains in effect

UPDATE 11 A.M. – The Village of Lumby is still under a state of emergency.

An evacuation order remains in place for residents at 1879 Faulkner Ave., units one to 10, residents at 2156 Bessette St., units one to 12, 1886 Shuswap Ave. and 1746 Vernon St.

An evacuation alert remains in place for residents on Faulkner Avenue and Bessette Street not affected by the order, residents on Heighway Crescent, Quesnel Road, Vale Avenue, and Maple Street between Quesnel Road and Shields Avenue as well as residents at the Saddle Mountain Residential Complex.

Residents in these areas should be prepared to leave their homes on short notice should conditions along Duteau Creek, Bessette Creek or Harris Creek worsen. They may also wish to take steps to protect their properties from potential flooding.

An Emergency Support Services reception centre has been set up at the White Valley Community Centre at 2250 Shields Ave. to provide information and services to those affected by the evacuation orders and alerts. Citizens on evacuation order are asked to register at the centre.

Sunday brings another day of uncertainty in Lumby.

The Lumby emergency operations centre was activated again at 5 a.m. because of ongoing flooding in the community.

“Crews and equipment worked from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday,” said Tom Kadla, chief administrative officer.

“Priority remains ensuring the diking integrity around key critical areas along the creek in Lumby. Significant progress is being made and if the weather co-operates, we look to make similar gains today.

“The RCMP, firefighters and related emergency response agencies, volunteers, contractors, and village employees continue to do amazing work together. Priority remains to keep all parties safe while dealing with this emergency of keeping life and property safe,” said Kadla.

The state of local emergency remains in effect.
