On Monday, February 10, 2020 a large fire broke out at the old planer mill at the former Canal Flats mill site.

The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) reports that firefighters from Fairmont assisted the Canal Flats Fire Department and they were able to contain the fire to the old planer mill, which was being used for manufacturing. There are several companies that currently run out of the old mill site.

“While the fire is now under control, it will take several days to fully extinguish and crews will remain on scene to extinguish hot spots,” said the RDEK.
