UPDATE:

Quesnel RCMP confirmed five people were taken to hospital after a crash on Highway 97 with minor injuries as a precaution.

ORIGINAL STORY:

At least one person is injured after a three-vehicle collision on Highway 97 just south of Quesnel.

Emergency crews were quickly on scene, opening a single lane of traffic to ease congestion on the highway.

A witness at the scene said two SUVs collided on the highway, with both spilling to the west side of the highway.

One SUV struck a cube van waiting to cross or turn onto the highway. The other crashed into the ditch, just missing a pole.

The driver of the SUV in the ditch appeared to be injured, but exited the vehicle and walked under his own power to a stretcher nearby a waiting ambulance.

In the run up to the intersection (Highway 97 and Gook Road), the highway goes from a single lane, to a three way lane with both left and right hand turning lanes.

Quesnel Fire Department members were on hand to make sure no fires started in the area.
