UPDATE: Four-year-old suffers two broken legs in fall from window

A four-year-old boy who fell out of a third-floor apartment building window on Saturday night in Abbotsford suffered two broken femurs, but will otherwise make a full recovery.

Police were called to the 32000 block of Mt. Waddington Avenue just before 8 p.m.

Abbotsford Police Sgt. Judy Bird said the boy had climbed up on a couch, pushed out a screen covering the window and then fell to the ground. An adult family member was home at the time.

Personnel with Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service and BC Ambulance responded to the incident, and the child was transported by air ambulance to BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver.

Bird said these types of incidents are common during the summer. She advised that falls of this nature can be prevent by ensuring that children cannot reach open windows and that furniture not be placed near windows.

“Windows that are open even four inches can be dangerous for children,” Bird said.

She suggested using guards or locks that prevent windows from opening more than a few inches.
