Wednesday’s early morning gusty winds in the Kootenay Lake region resulted in power outages across the Creston Valley and surrounding area.

Gusts reached speeds of 50 to 70 km/h, according to Environment Canada. As of Friday, FortisBC is reporting that most affected areas have had their power restored. There are spots throughout the Kootenay Bay region that are still without power.

A total of 536 homes in the Boswell and Gray Creek were without power until at least Thursday. In the Walkers, Kootenay Bay and Crawford Bay region, there were at least 864 residences experiencing power outages.

FortisBC reported that 226 residences along Highway 3 between Erickson and Yahk were without power on Wednesday but had their power restored later that day. In the downtown Creston area, 43 residences and businesses were without power. In the Lakeview-Arrow Creek area, 14 residences were without power, while five homes in the Lister area were experiencing power outages. There were a total of 10 homes in West Creston also without power.

Winds eased Wednesday afternoon, and said Environment Canada reminded residents to adjust their driving due to changing road conditions.

“Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage,” said Environment Canada.
