UPDATE: 100 Mile House RCMP have arrested one suspect in connection to the Bank of Montreal break-in Friday morning.

Staff Sgt. Svend Nielsen said 100 Mile House RCMP responded to the call early Friday morning. On arrival, the responding observed a “glass break” into the main building of the bank and investigated. Within he found that several doors, cabinets and desk drawers were left open.

Shortly after Nielsen said the officer received a report of a complaint near Donex Pharmacy on Birch Avenue. There he located a 27-year-old Caucasian male lying on the ground with drug paraphernalia in his possession visible to the officer.

“This male has been previously arrested for similar events in the area,” Nielsen said. “Subsequent to arrest for possession of a controlled substance, the officer searched the backpack of the suspect and located a stamp belonging to BMO as well as several BMO envelopes.”

The officer then arrested the man for breaking and entering and possession of the stolen property. The suspect remains in custody as the investigation continues. He is well known to the RCMP.

Nielsen said the RCMP would like to thank the witnesses who assisted in solving this case. By reporting unusual or suspicious activities the public can actively help deter crime, as a witness did when they saw the suspect behind the pharmacy.

Anyone with information on this event can contact RCMP at 250-395-2456 or BC Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS(8477).

The file number for this case is 2021-2011.

ORIGINAL STORY: The Bank of Montreal in the South Cariboo Mall was broken into early Friday morning.

Sgt. Brad McKinnon was on scene with officers investigating the taped-off crime scene. McKinnon said 100 Mile House RCMP received the report of a commercial alarm Friday morning and upon arrival determined the bank had been broken into.

“The investigation is currently underway and police are taking steps to secure evidence so we can hold the persons who did this responsible,” McKinnon said.

As the day and investigation progresses, McKinnon said more information would be shared with the public. The BMO’s windows and doors are currently boarded with plywood and officers mentioned broken glass within the building.
