UPDATE: Man in custody after lengthy police incident at Victoria housing facility

Man to be assessed by paramedics, traffic expected to return to normal

One man is in police custody after a three-hour standoff at Paul’s Motor Inn Friday morning.

Victoria police were called to the temporary residential facility just before 8:20 a.m. for a report that a man had shot a gun in the area. when police arrived they found the suspect inside one of the units along with evidence that a weapon may have been discharged.

The Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team arrived on scene around 9:30 a.m. and began communicating with the man by megaphone. The VicPD K9 unit was also called in to assist. At 11:45 the man left the unit unannounced. According to police he refused to follow officers’ commands and ARWEN less-lethal munition were used to take him into custody.

The man was assessed by paramedics and transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries for further assessment.

Police say the incident – including the type of potential firearm used – remains under investigation.

In June, the province purchased the inn for about $15 million to provide 75 temporary homes for those experiencing homelessness.
