The Kitimat Marine Rescue Society and the Canadian Coast Guard are currently searching for a boat and its captain which went missing yesterday afternoon on the Douglas Channel.

Coast Guard Officer Doug Murdoch of the Victoria Rescue Coordination Centre, reports that on 4 p.m. Thursday a 28 foot vessel, the Steel Eagle, reported engine failure on the Douglas Channel about 20 km south of Kitimat.

The boat had one 69-year-old male on board. There was no further radio contact with the vessel, and Murdoch noted strong outflow winds and relatively rough seas at that time.

Five ships in total, plus a cormorant helicopter, has been searching the area, but so far have turned up no sign of the Steel Eagle or its captain.

The search is continuing in the daylight.

The last official update on this operation was made at 8 a.m. this morning, and was collected by the Sentinel at 10 a.m.
