UPDATE – Nanaimo courthouse reopened after evacuation

NANAIMO – A suspicious package left on the counter at the court registry triggers evacuation at Nanaimo courthouse.

Nanaimo courthouse has been reopened.

Nanaimo courthouse was evacuated shortly before noon Friday  after a woman entered the court registry offices, dropped a package on the counter, yelled something and fled the building.

Kent Locke, lawyer, said he was filing documents at the registry when the woman entered.

“She came around from behind me and yelled something, I think she said, ‘Free my people,’ or something and then walked out,” Locke said.

Sheriffs evacuated the building immediately afterward.

An RCMP bomb disposal team was brought in from Vancouver, which arrived at the courthouse shortly after 3 p.m. After investigating the package the team gave the all clear and allowed staff back into the building at about 3:30 p.m. after finding no explosive device.
