UPDATE: Nanaimo RCMP looking for suspects behind suspicious Bastion fire

Two people seen in the area where the fire broke out Monday

  • Jul. 14, 2020 12:00 a.m.

Nanaimo RCMP hope the public can help identify two people seen at the time a fire broke out at the city’s historical Bastion.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue and RCMP responded shortly before 12:30 p.m. Monday when smoke was seen billowing from the back of the former Hudson’s Bay Company fort in downtown Nanaimo. According to police, someone had started a fire in the stairwell leading to a basement door. The fire ignited the wooden door and was spreading around its frame until a passerby stopped and knocked the blaze down with a fire extinguisher.

Two people were seen at the fire at the time of the incident.

Police were called to investigate when Nanaimo Fire Rescue deemed the fire suspicious.

“Although this structure was unoccupied, the building and the contents have a significant historical value,” said Sgt. Jon Stuart, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, in a press release. “We are looking for assistance in locating the persons responsible for this fire.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
