It was a busy Tuesday night for Duncan firefighters.
A crew was called out during the dinner hour to extinguish a blaze in the garage behind a home at 1031 Marchmont Ave.
Smoke could be seen (and smelled) from at least five kilometres to the northeast.
Witnesses noticed the activity.
Firefighters broke down a fence from a neighbouring driveway to pull hoses through from the hydrant. The lone injury as a result of the incident occurred when a firefighter twisted his knee at the scene.
In addition to the garage, which sustained substantial damage, flames spread to an outbuilding on the property next door, and to grass in the yard behind. Firefighters quickly extinguished those flare-ups, although Duncan fire chief Mike McKinlay noted that the outbuilding will require some repairs.
To complicate matters, however, Duncan Fire’s first responders were called out for double duty when a medical aid call for a person having a potential heart attack came in as they were working at the fire. Three firefighters left the garage blaze for that call.
If that wasn’t enough, the hall also received an page that alarms were going off at a location on Al Wilson Grove while the crew was split between the fire and the medical aid. A crew from North Cowichan’s South End Fire Hall were requested for mutual aid at the latter call.
