A 29-year-old Surrey man was struck and killed by a freight train near 225th Street and the Haney Bypass in Maple Ridge on Saturday.

Emergency crews were called to the area at about 5 p.m. where a pedestrian had been struck and killed by a westbound train.

“A male pedestrian was standing on a parallel track waiting for a train to pass so he could cross,” said Cpl. Brenda Winpenny. “A second train arrived and engaged its emergency stop procedures and sounded the horn extensively, but it appears he did not see or hear it.”

She confirmed the man was wearing headphones at the time.

The RCMP and CP Rail continue to investigate the incident.

Multiple train crossings were blocked by the long freight train for an unknown length of time.
