Update: West Kelowna RCMP say a man in his 40s was injured and taken to hospital Monday after a large amount of snow on top of a metal outbuilding on his property collapsed, pinning him inside.

Corp. Cory LePine said the man appeared to suffer serious, but non-life-threatening, injuries while trying to shore up the metal building, about the size of a small garage. The building was almost completely constructed at the time.

The property is located on Gill Road above Glenrosa in West Kelowna.

The incident happened around 1 p.m. Monday.

Crews from the West Kelowna Fire Department freed the man, who was not immediately identified, and he was taken by ambulance to Kelowna General Hospital.

LePine said it appeared a build-up of heavy snow on top of the building brought it down. He said the building was destroyed.

The family of the man, who were home at the time of the incident, heard his cries for help and responded.

Reports indicate a person is trapped on the property after a possible outbuilding collapsed.

It’s unclear if the entire building or a section of the building fell onto the person. Those on scene say it’s possible snow from the roof of the building toppled down onto the person, trapping them.

Firefighters are on scene and say the person is breathing and they are working to free them.
