The province’s police watchdog has been called in to investigate an overnight crash involving an off-duty officer that sent a pedestrian to hospital.

The off-duty officer was driving a grey Subaru Outback travelling eastbound on the Langley Bypass near 196th Street when the collision occurred around 12:40 a.m., the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of British Columbia said.

“The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.”

During the Thursday morning commute the crash investigation was still on scene at the Langley-Surrey border, where both of the left lanes were blocked. There was minimal impact to the flow of traffic as investigators continued their work through mid-morning.

The IIO is now investigating the officer’s actions to determine if they may have committed an offence. The Langley RCMP is investigating the collision.

Earlier, Langley RCMP media spokesperson Cpl. Holly Largy confirmed the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene.

“Witnesses to the collision say the individual was walking in the middle of the bypass,” she said.

The man was taken to hospital in serious condition.

The IIO is asking anyone with dashcam footage or other information of the collision to contact the witness line at 1-855-446-8477 or submit information at iiobc.ca.
