UPDATE: Power restored to many in Harrison, Kent

Nearly 4,000 residents were without power since 1 a.m. Wednesday

  • Jan. 13, 2021 12:00 a.m.

Many residents in Harrison Hot Springs, Harrison Mills and Kent now have their lights back on after a windstorm knocked out power to thousands overnight.

The largest outage for the area went from Hemlock Mountain down through Dewdney, with more than 2,100 houses without power since 1 a.m. Wednesday due to a downed wire. BC Hydro crews were assigned to that outage, and the power was expected to turn on at 4 p.m. More than half of those homes are now connected, although much of the mountain up to Sts’ailes is still without power as of 4:30 p.m.

Harrison Hot Springs also saw significant outages, with more than 1,500 people without power since 1:20 a.m. and a number of trees impacting power lines in the area. Power had been restored to most of those residents, although parts of Rockwell Drive are still in the dark as of 4:30 p.m.

The Kilby area was without power starting at 4:15 a.m., but their power has now been restored.

Trees are down on Highway 7 in the area, and crews have been dispatched to clear them, according to DriveBC. Residents posted in local Facebook groups that power lines were down on Rockwell Drive this morning, with a fallen tree resting on top of them. Trees in Agassiz’s Centennial Park also came down in the storm.

Despite the intense wind that stretched across the Lower Mainland, no official weather alert was listed for the area. The closest alert was for the Fraser Canyon, south of Lytton.
