Northern Health has expanded COVID-19 vaccine eligibility to those community members in Smithers and area to persons born in 1966 or before (55 years and older).

Those wishing to be vaccinated now need to register first. Registration is available on the Northern Health website or by calling 1-833-838-2323.

Eryn Collins, a spokesperson for Northern Health explained the changes.

“Having those who want to be immunized registered in the system, will allow us to better plan for upcoming clinic capacity,” she said. “And if we need to accelerate our timelines (move to a lower age range, sooner) in order to operate clinics at full capacity, then we’ll have the ability to do so based on the registrations by those in the next eligible groups.”

First doses for this 55+ age group will be administered starting May 1.

Registration is available to all adults. Once registered, individuals wishing to be vaccinated will be notified when they are eligible to book an appointment as their age cohort comes up.

Additionally all Indigenous people 18+ are eligible for appointments.

The clinic in Smithers is located at Coast Mountain College.
