Nanaimo residents should brace for snow beginning tonight, says Environment Canada.
While Environment Canada issued a special weather statement Thursday, it has changed to a snowfall warning. Rain or snow is forecast to begin the evening of Saturday, Jan. 23, continuing until the afternoon of Sunday, Jan. 24. The warning is in effect for areas from Duncan to Nanaimo, Nanoose Bay to Fanny Bay and Courtenay to Campbell River.
“The complex terrain around the south coast will result in varied snowfall totals across the region,” Environment Canada said. “Communities immediately near the water such as Comox, Parksville, Nanaimo and downtown Vancouver will see up to 5 cm of snow.”
The Malahat highway is expected to see 10 cm of snow and Campbell River to Courtenay could see 10 to 15 cm of snow, said Environment Canada.
Snow is expected to change to mixed rain in many areas by late Sunday afternoon. Weather in the mountains can change suddenly, leading to hazardous driving conditions, Environment Canada said.
