Clearwater town council voted during its Oct. 18 meeting to amend an earlier decision to impose a 30 km/hr speed limit next to Dutch Lake beach.
The speed-zone now will be in place from May to September only.
“Our timing was not really great,” commented councillor Ken Kjenstad when he made the motion to amend.
Mayor John Harwood noted that the speed-zone had been the subject of a recent Question of the Week in the Times.
From comments in the newspaper and online the consensus appeared to be that, while having a speed-zone next to the beach was thought to be a good thing in summer, having it year-round would be counter-productive.
“It’s unusual to get unanimity in the Question of the Week,” the mayor said.
Within a few hours, the municipality’s fleet, equipment and roads manager, Mike Smith was removing the 30 km/hr signs, which had gone up less than three weeks earlier.
