UPDATE: Two ATVers dead after trying to cross creek south of Campbell River

Search involved search and rescue, the coast guard and 442 Squadron from CFB Comox

Two people died attempting to cross a creek south of Campbell River Sunday morning, RCMP confirm.

Just after noon, emergency crews were called to an incident involving all-terrain vehicle riders near Woods Creek on Sunday morning.

They arrived to find that an adult and two youths had tried to cross the water but had been swept away.

“One of those people was found uninjured yesterday,” Staff Sgt. Troy Beauregard said. “Another person was located deceased, and recovery efforts went on throughout the day to try and locate the third person.”

One of the youths had been pulled out of the water by a passerby. Campbell River RCMP activated Search and Rescue, Canadian Coast Guard, Oyster River Fire, RCMP Victim Services and SAR Helicopter as the search continued for the other two people continued.

At approximately 4 p.m., the second youth was located deceased downstream. The search continued from the point of entry into the creek to the ocean.

Due to darkness and the high water levels the search was halted for the evening.

The search was suspended Sunday night because of concern for volunteers working in the dark, and efforts resumed the next morning at first light.

Just before 9:30 a.m., the body of the third person, the adult male, was located and recovered. All the victims were from Campbell River.

The BC Coroner’s Service will continue with the investigation.
