Update on May 7
A “distanced” community clean-up is being held on Saturday, May 9 in Vanderhoof, but this year people are not going to gather at Riverside Park.
The event is being held from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and is organized by the Nechako Waste Reduction Initiative, along with the District of Vanderhoof.
Organizers said that there will be no barbecue this year due to the pandemic, but bags and gloves are available for pick-up around town.
The pick-up points are — Ferland Park, Riverside Park, Leiding Park, Bradley Park, Northside Church Park, NVSS Parking Lot, and behind the Post Office.
All bag pick-up locations are un-manned, organizers said, adding howere that people will be able to identify them if they look for two large pylons (traffic cones). These will be in place at 10 am on Saturday morning.
Participants also have to text 250-524-0236 or 250-567-0492 on Friday night (May 8), to secure their location to clean.
“You may text earlier, however you will not receive a response until Friday night. Prior to that, NWRI will try to respond to FB messages if you have any questions. Full garbage bags can be left along the road/street you are cleaning,” NWRI stated on their Facebook Event Page.

Vanderhoof’s annual community clean-up has been postponed amidst the virus pandemic.
This event is well attended by residents of all ages and is organized by the Nechako Waste Reduction Initiative in Vanderhoof. This year the event was initially scheduled for April 25, but due to the pandemic plans have changed.
Organizers said they are going to re-assess the situation in a month, and see if they can organize the community clean-up then.
“If rules are relaxed a bit, then we will try. But there won’t be a BBQ like other years,” Zoe Dhillon from the NWRI said.
