The Courtenay Fire Department is investigating the cause of a blaze that destroyed a single car garage and the vehicle inside.

The fire occurred early Tuesday morning, May 1, on McPhee Avenue, near 17 Street.

“The call came in at 5:23 [a.m.],” said Courtenay Fire Chief, Don Bardonnex. “When I first got there, the structure was fully involved and there was a car inside that was fully involved, there was a boat on the outside that was partially involved, and the siding on the neighbour’s house was melting.”

There were no injuries or casualties reported.

There were reports of a couple of explosions.

“Could have been tires, draft shaft, but there were no propane tanks,”said Bardonnex.
