One man is in custody after being stopped by a spike belt in Langley, following a police search and pursuit that veered from Surrey to Chilliwack.

Surrey RCMP received a report of a possible assault in a vehicle at about 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 3, said Surrey RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Chad Greig.

The suspect’s car, a white BMW sedan, was reportedly already on the way to Chilliwack when Surrey RCMP received the alert. Police feared the victim was still in the vehicle.

The BMW was spotted by a Lower Mainland Police Dog Service officer near Chilliwack.

The dog service officer pulled up behind the BMW, but the suspect driver put the BMW in reverse and crashed into the police officer’s vehicle before fleeing.

Police then pursued the BMW west on the Trans-Canada Highway. A witness told Black Press that numerous police vehicles were speeding on Highway One near Lickman Road in Chilliwack at about 9:40 p.m.

A spike belt was deployed to stop the car, and it came to a halt near 232nd Street in Langley, in the fast westbound lane.

The driver was arrested and a passenger was found safe inside the vehicle, Greig said.

Drivers reported on Twitter all westbound traffic was stopped on Highway 1 for some time as numerous RCMP units arrived with lights and sirens to assist with the incident.

The vehicle was towed away and followed by RCMP around 10:30 p.m.

“Thanks to the seamless collaboration between multiple jurisdictions, the suspect was successfully apprehended and the victim nor the public were put at further risk,” said Greig.

Kulwinderpal Khosah, 32, of Surrey, has been charged with dangerous operation of a conveyance and flight from police.

His next court appearance is set for January 11 in Surrey.
