Abbotsford firefighters responded to a fire at the recycling depot on Valley Road.

UPDATED: Crews called to fire at recycling depot

Smoke and flames reported to be coming from the site on Valley Road in Abbotsford.

Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service was called to the Abbotsford Mission Recycling Depot for a fire at about 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday.

Heavy smoke and flames greeted firefighters when they arrived on scene, said Asst. Chief Jeff Adams. There was fire at three different locations in the piles of cardboard, and the wind hampered extinguishment efforts. The blaze was kept to the outside of the facility, due to the building’s sprinkler system activating.

Adams said the cause of the fire is still unknown. Firefighters were on scene until just before 8 p.m., and at the incident’s height, there were about 35 members on scene.

The depot is located at 33670 Valley Rd., west of Highway 11 (the Abbotsford Mission Highway).
