Police have confirmed that a driver who was struck by his own vehicle on Friday night was killed in the crash.
The collision occurred at about 6 p.m. on Dec. 9 on the Lougheed Highway by Chester Street.
Mission RCMP and Fire Rescue Service were called out to the incident.
Upon arrival, rescuers found a vehicle in a ditch with a pedestrian reportedly trapped under the vehicle, against a tree, and suffering from serious injuries.
Mission RCMP Cont. James Mason said, in a press release, that the man was pronounced dead on scene.
The incident was a two-vehicle collision.
“One vehicle was stationary, had gone off the road earlier, and through a series of events, another vehicle struck the already-stationary vehicle,” he explained.
The driver of the stationary vehicle was outside of his car at the time.
“He ended up being struck by his own vehicle,” Mason said.
The RCMP ICARS (Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service) team was on scene collecting information. Two tow trucks were needed to pull the vehicle out of the ditch.
The highway was closed for several hours.
Mason said the accident appears to be the result of vehicles “not equipped for the weather,” meaning they had no snow tires.
Mason said all-season tires are not enough in these icy conditions.
“Due to our heavy snowfall, a number of vehicles have been involved in either single- or multi-vehicle collisions. Many have been due to ill-prepared vehicles, running on all-season or bald tires.”
He reminded local motorists to drive with caution.
