A brush fire in the Silver Spray area in East Sooke has been brought under control by East Sooke, Sooke and Metchosin Fire and Rescue crews after smoke was spotted around 1 p.m. on Sunday.
The fire doubled in size at one point, growing to a quarter acre, said East Sooke Fire Chief Roger Beck, who was co-ordinating the entire operation with a total of 19 firefighters.
The fire began nearly 20 meters down a driveway, encompassing mostly small brush and tree shrubs, Beck added, pointing out that equipment was difficult to transport due to the rough nature of the terrain.
As of 3:10 p.m. (Sunday August 14) the fire has been contained and not grown beyond its initial size.
Beck said on Monday morning (August 15) that while the fire is mostly out, fire crews discovered debris was still smouldering between rock cracks.
Cause of the fire was caused by a small camp site that was set up the night before, Beck noted, adding that the individuals responsible did not properly put out the flames when they departed.
