A fire at the CKF Industries factory at 5850 Production Way in Langley City Sunday afternoon started inside an egg carton manufacturing machine and spread into the building ventilation pipes, City fire chief Rory Thompson said.
The pipes had a buildup of resin, Thompson told The Times.
Crews arrived about 4 p.m. to see “heavy black smoke and flames visible,” Thompson said.
Multiple units of the Langley City and Township fire departments responded.
Three engines, two ladder trucks, and two rescue vehicles attended the three-alarm structure fire with 28 firefighters.
It took about two hours to extinguish the fire.
Thompson said the heavy snow and ice made for slippery conditions that hampered fire suppression efforts.
There were no injuries.
The extent of damage has not yet been determined.
Last year, it took 17 hours to finally extinguish a ‘challenging’ egg carton fire at the CKF factory on Thursday, May 28.
The building had sprinklers which kept the fire from spreading to the plant’s machinery.
The factory makes moulded pulp and foam products like disposable plates, egg and fruit cartons.
It employs 150 people at the Langley address, making it the largest employer in the city.
