A gas leak was causing traffic backups in Victoria and Saanich Wednesday afternoon as northbound lanes of Douglas Street were closed.
FortisBC crews were conducting “proactive maintenance” on a natural gas line in the area earlier in the day, according to spokesperson Lauren Lea, although she specified they did not cause the leak.
The Saanich police and fire department were called to the 3300-block of Douglas, which they closed to all traffic from Cloverdale Avenue to Audley Street. Police issued the alert, first on social media, on Dec. 23 around 2 p.m., saying the closure could be four hours.
Businesses in the area were evacuated and closed for the afternoon.
The road opened shortly before 6 p.m., according to Saanich police.
