Updated: Highway open east, closed west

The recent dump of snow had Highway 1 closed east of Golden for avalanche control yesterday, and closed west today.

Highway 1 is closed west of Golden for avalanche control, and is expected to open early this afternoon (Jan. 7).

The Ministry of Transportation was performing avalanche control east of Golden yesterday afternoon, closing the highway into the evening.

A helicopter carrying a DaisyBell triggered avalanches along the highway. TheĀ DaisyBell explodes a hydrogen/oxygen mixture above the snowpack, which is the preferred method over dynamite because it does not impact the rock surface underneath.

The blasts from the DaisyBell have brought snow onto the highway, which must be removed before the highway can reopen.

Check drivebc.ca for updates. Avalanche control east was delayed because of four spun out semi trailers, one of which had to be towed out of the avalanche control zone.
