UPDATED: Langley house fire uncovers meth lab

No injuries reported in Saturday blaze in 22900 block of 40 Avenue

A fire in a rental home uncovered a meth lab Saturday morning.

The blaze in the 22900 block of 40 Avenue caused extensive damage to the interior of the three-storey wood frame home. It also brought in Clandestine Lab specialists and a hazardous goods removal company to deal with the lab’s toxic remnants, said police.

The owners reside in a house at the back of the property and were home at the time of the fire. The front house had recently been rented and the tenants were in the process of moving in, said police. The tenants were not home at the time of the fire.

When fire crews arrived around 4 a.m., the blaze was deemed suspicious and there was a concern there may be a drug lab on the third floor of the home.

For health reasons, it was not safe for anyone to enter the home immediately and the Clandestine Lab specialists were asked to attend.

Clandestine Drug investigators located items within the residence indicating a production lab of synthetic drugs.  Later that day a hazardous goods removal company did the clean up.

No charges will be laid because police are unable to identify the people operating the meth lab.

No injuries were reported but the fire drew dozens of firefighters to the scene.

Roadblocks were set up between 228 and 232 Streets on 40 Avenue for most of Saturday.
