Two suspects were arrested following an armed robbery at the Nelson and District Credit Union’s Nelson branch this afternoon.
Police Chief Wayne Holland told 103.5 The Bridge they have a male and female in custody and recovered an undisclosed amount of cash, which was stolen from NDCU at about 2:15 p.m. on Friday, April 25.
“I want the public know they are safe — there is no one at large — and at this point the investigation will continue,” Holland said.
One witness, who was just outside the credit union when the incident occurred, told the Star he saw police in close pursuit of a speeding car driven by a young woman with a man in a hoodie in the passenger seat.
This is the second robbery in Nelson this month. On Friday, April 11 the Kootenay Currency Exchange was held up by a man with a gun who fired his weapon during the incident.
“The RCMP and Nelson Police Department have been living and breathing this for the last two weeks so we’re tremendously pleased that a very dangerous duo has been put into custody,” Holland said. “We hope it’s the end to armed robberies in this vicinity.”
Other armed robberies in the region include: Kootenay Savings Credit Union in Castlegar on March 11, Johnny’s Groceries and Gas in Robson on March 7, the Kootenay Savings in Salmo on February 24, and the Paragon Pharmacy in Castlegar on November 13.
