One person was killed in a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 5 near Barriere, officials have confirmed.

Blackpool Fire deputy chief Mike Savage said the Thursday evening crash involved three large semi-trailers and a passenger vehicle.

Two of the semis as well as the passenger vehicle caught fire.

Savage would not confirm which vehicle the person was travelling in at the time of the collision.

One of the semi trucks caused the nearby hillside to catch, which started a small wildfire

Fire departments from Little Fort, Blackpool and Barriere, as well as Highway Rescue, attended the scene, which left the highway closed for hours.

According to DriveBC, the highway is now open to all traffic.
