UPDATE: Director of Development Services Mark Allen said that the highway was expected to be reopened this afternoon, Aug. 19. A permanent fix for the road will be addressed sometime in September.

A section of highway in Smithers where crews are currently working to finish the South Trunk Sewer Project have closed off traffic entirely after the discovery of what they’re calling a pothole depression.

Western Industrial Contractors were alerted of the depression at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 17.

A temporary closure of that section of highway, between 16th Avenue and 19th Avenue, is in effect until further notice. A detour is in effect on North Frontage Road.

As a result of the detour the the two way stop on Frontage Road and 16th Avenue has turned into a three-way stop.

The contractor and engineers are evaluating the situation and investigating the cause and repairs are currently underway.
