UPDATE:
Robyn Clark, the fire information officer for the Cariboo Fire Centre, has provided some additional information on the fires started yesterday in the Quesnel area.
The Chevans Creek fire remains at 0.1 hectare. Clark says personnel are on site to assess the fire today.
The East of Blackwater River fire remains 17 hectares and there is one helicoptor on site, says Clark.
And the Yuzkli Lake Fire has had increased fire behaviour, but Clark says her latest update is that the fire remains at 40 hectares.
“No communities or structures are threatened by these fires at this time,” says Clark.
There is also a spot fire on Nazko Road which started Aug. 7. It is just 0.01 hectares.
Finally the Tzenzaicut Lake fire, which started Aug. 7, has 26 crew members on site and may still be visible from Quesnel and Kersley, although no communities or structures are threatened, says Clark.
ORIGINAL STORY:
The BC Wildfire Service’s interactive map is showing three new fire starts around the Quesnel region, all started Aug. 8.
The closest is a fire west of Quesnel at Chevans Creek, listed as 0.1 hectare.
Another is East of the Blackwater River, located northwest of Quesnel and due north of Nazko, at 17 hectares, and is listed with lightning as its cause.
Northwest of Wells, there is a fire listed at Yuzkli Lake, at 40 hectares, and also listed with lightning as its cause.
The Observer has contacted the Cariboo Fire Centre for more information on these and other fires near to Quesnel, including the Tzenzaicut Lake Fire, which started on Aug. 7 and is currently listed at 25 hectares. This fire is south west of Quesnel and yesterday the Cariboo Fire Centre said it may be visible from Quesnel and Kersley.
Across the Cariboo, one Wildfire of Note has been added in the region, along with the Horsefly Lake Fire and the Shag Creek Fire, for which there is an evacuation order in place. The Wild Goose Lake Fire is located south west of 100 Mile House and is estimated at 850 hectares and zero per cent contained. The BC Wildfire Service notes the fire escaped the guard on Aug. 7 and has since grown. Ground crews are working to establish containment lines.
The BC Wildfire Service interactive map is updated by the Service when possible, so information on individual fires varies.
